Salmon on the kelp line

Out of Masset Inlet and west along the kelp — clipped into Scotty downriggers, dropped to the secret depth of the day, trolling naked herring, anchovy or a flasher. Cut-plug herring is a West Coast tradition, and in the right conditions, deadly.

• Strigh Island shallows. First stop out of Masset Inlet — the hot spots start here.
• The “Glory Hole”. A sheltered kelp bay past Hidden Island. Monster Chinook have come out of this water.
• Wiah Point & the Red Can. Deeper water — follow the ridge, circle back along the kelp.
• Cape Edenshaw. Kelp beds, rock outcroppings and deep current lines on the edge of Naden Harbour.

Halibut in shallow water

The Naden opening — between Cape Edenshaw and Cape Naden — or east to Virago Sound: shallow for halibut at 40 to 100 feet, “but very productive when fished just right.” Anchored with a scent bag and jigging gear, or bounce-balling the cannonballs just off bottom.
